Not medical advice
HotColdRecovery publishes general information about cold plunges, ice baths, saunas, steam rooms and related equipment. Nothing on this site is medical advice, and it is not a substitute for advice from a doctor or other qualified health professional who knows your health history. We are not doctors, and we do not diagnose, treat or prevent any condition.
Research on cold and heat exposure is still developing. Where we describe possible benefits, we are summarizing what has been published or reported, not promising any result for you.
Talk to your doctor first
Cold water immersion and high heat put real stress on the body. They can raise or drop your heart rate and blood pressure quickly. Please speak with your doctor before you start if any of these apply to you:
- a heart condition, an irregular heartbeat, or a history of stroke
- high or low blood pressure
- you are pregnant or may be pregnant
- Raynaud’s, cold urticaria (cold allergy) or other circulation problems
- diabetes, epilepsy or a seizure disorder
- any respiratory condition, recent surgery or injury
- you take medication that affects your heart rate, blood pressure, temperature control or alertness
Children and older adults can react to cold and heat more strongly. Do not use cold plunge or sauna routines with children unless a doctor has said it is appropriate.
Basic safety
- Never cold plunge or use a sauna alone, especially when you are new to it.
- Do not use either after drinking alcohol or using drugs.
- Start with short sessions and milder temperatures. Get out right away if you feel dizzy, confused, short of breath, numb, or unwell.
- Cold shock can make you gasp involuntarily. Never put your head under cold water, and never plunge in open water without a trained person present.
- Stay hydrated and cool down gradually after heat exposure.
Equipment and electrical safety
Chillers, heaters, saunas and pumps combine water and electricity. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local electrical and building codes. Use a properly rated, ground-fault-protected (GFCI) circuit where required, and have a licensed electrician handle any wiring. Product specifications, prices and availability change; check the manufacturer’s current information before you buy.
