Red light therapy comes in two very different product categories: handheld wands and masks (compact, targeted, $50-$400) and full panels (large, whole-body, $400-$3,000). Both use similar wavelengths (typically 660nm red and 850nm near-infrared), but they solve completely different problems. Buying the wrong category is the single most common mistake in this category.
The core question: what are you treating?
Face, skin, targeted spot (acne, scar, joint pain): Handheld or mask. You want high irradiance on a small area for 5-15 minutes. A full panel is overkill and awkward.
Whole-body recovery, sleep, muscle recovery, testosterone support: Full panel. You need meaningful surface area coverage. A handheld wand pointing at your chest for six months does approximately nothing at scale.
Irradiance actually matters
Irradiance (measured in mW/cm² at a specific distance) is the amount of red-light energy hitting a square centimeter of your skin per second. Under 30 mW/cm² is essentially cosmetic. 50-100 mW/cm² is where meaningful biological effects start. Handheld wands are usually 30-50 mW/cm² at surface; premium panels are 100-200 mW/cm² at 6 inches. The number in a product listing means nothing without the distance – always check “irradiance at 6 inches” as the standard.
Common handheld use cases
- Anti-aging on face: 3-5 minutes per zone, 3-5x weekly. Most masks and wands work. Consistency matters more than device power.
- Post-workout knee or shoulder: 10-15 minutes on the joint. A handheld is more efficient than a panel here.
- Chronic minor pain (back, elbow): Handheld or a smaller panel like the Mito MitoMOBILE.
Common full-panel use cases
- Whole-body recovery from training: 10-20 minutes standing 6-12 inches from a full-body panel (roughly 3ft x 1ft or larger).
- Circadian rhythm and sleep: 10 minutes near the panel in the morning as a photobiomodulation “wake” signal, or evening low-intensity red for melatonin support.
- Skin (whole torso, back acne): Panel is easier than any handheld.
What to skip
The mid-priced $150-300 “hybrid” handhelds that claim both face-and-body coverage almost never do either well. You are better off spending $50 on a dedicated face mask and $400 on a small panel than $250 on a device that does both mediocrely.
Also: red light bulbs marketed as therapy devices are almost never verified for irradiance and often waste power in wavelengths outside the therapeutic window. Stick to devices with published third-party irradiance measurements.
